M&M's offer customization. You can put your own message on, select colours and the type of packaging.
The brand says that one of the key benefits for them is it widens the number of relevant "occasions" for the brand. Whereas in the past marketers tried to associate their product to a number of occasions (Easter, Christmas etc), customization makes the product relevant to any occasion in every consumer's life: a birthday, a celebration, any gifting moment, or just for fun.
In a workshop with another large consumer brand recently they were both amazed and dismayed when I showed them this example: amazed that it was happening and dismayed that they themselves hadn't even begun to make any moves towards offering customization.
