I have to declare and interest in this example- together with my friend Bobby I run a T shirt label called Trendy Mofo where we are big into customization.
Part of the inspiration came from summers spent in Ibiza, and seeing the vogue for customization, especially on the terrace at Space.
When we launched Trendy Mofo we wanted to encourage this. Rather than offer "pre-customized" or "customized to order" T shirts, we want to encourage people to invest their own creativity.
So we created the customization kit.
The kit includes scissors, a pin badge, safety pins, and sheet giving instructions on how to achieve various effects. You can check out the techniques here.
We've done live T shirt customizations at Trendy Mofo parties, and on the website there is a gallery where you can send pictures of your customization efforts.

The T shirt has always been a great canvas for expression and self-expression. Customizing T shirts puts you in the sweet spot of having taken something universal and iconic, but made it your own. You're expressing your individuality, but not going completely avant-garde.
In Williamsburg, NYC, a couple of weeks ago I came across a Sunday market. Among the stalls was one selling customized American Apparel T shirts like the one pictured below.

We've got the Customization Guide Pt II coming out soon, which will mark the start of our "Show Me Your Mofo" campaign. Check out (and buy) T shirts on the site.
The next post will attempt to draw out some lessons and principles from some of these examples of customization.
